What is Lure Racing? Lure Coursing gives the Stafford and other breeds the opportunity to do what comes naturally .... to chase!!
The Staffordshire Bull Terrier Club of Qld hold 4 Lure days throughout the year, held around Brisbane.
What to do when you get there? First thing is to see the club officials and register your dog! Different ages run in different categories. 3 to 6 months of age = 40 metres 6 to 12 months = 60 metres 1 to 2 years of age = 100 metres 2 to 3 years of age = 100 metres 3 to 5 years of age =100 metres 5 to 7 years of age = 60 metres 7 to 10 years of age = 40 metres 10 and over = 40 metres Each of the above categories are also available for any other breed of dog not just Staffords! Bring all the family and have a great day out!
The Equipment!! The course is a straight line course. The lure is usually plastic bags on the end of a long line set up on a electric pulley which rapidly pulls the lure to the finish line, hopefully with your dog chasing it!!! All dogs must be run in a collar! That is the only equipment you will need to race. Of course, you must also make sure you have clean fresh water available to your dog and somewhere to contain or someone to hold your dog while you are not racing.
The Racing!! Each dog will have two runs at the lure! Before all racing starts, there will be a practice race for all newbies! This is a good way to get your dog use to the lure! When your name is called, go to the start line and get your dog ready. You may have to run a few times with your dog to get them use to chasing the Lure, so be prepared for exercise!! The starter will ask if you are ready, and then tell you when to go! There will be volunteers to catch your dog down the other end.
Your dog has completed his runs! What's next? After all dogs have run, the presentation will start. There are awards for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in each age class. There are also awards for the Fastest Dog of the Day! Fastest Bitch of the Day! Fastest Overall of the Day! and the Encouragement Award! The Lure Races are held for a fun day out with the dogs, a chance to get together and have a BBQ and conversation!! So, whether your dog win, loses or just has a run around the park and doesn't chase the lure, Enjoy the day out with your friends and your dog!!
